The St. Augustine community will gather at Ripley’s Believe It or Not! on November 4, 2023, for the 2023 Walk to Defeat ALS St. Augustine. The event aims to support and fund a cure for ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), a progressive motor neuron disease with no known cause or cure. Participants, including ALS patients, their families, friends, and supporters, will walk 1.5 miles to raise funds and awareness. The event is particularly significant as ALS patients have an average life expectancy of two to five years. In 2022, similar events in Florida raised over $902,000. The ALS Association, the world’s largest philanthropic funder of ALS research, organizes the event. The disease affects more than 1,600 people in Florida, with someone diagnosed or dying from ALS every 90 minutes.
