WWII Navy Veteran, 100, Honored by St. Johns County for Surviving Midway and Other Battles

John L. Patton, a 100-year-old Navy veteran who served in World War II’s Pacific Theater, was honored by St. Johns County and local military organizations. Patton survived some of the most significant battles of the war, including the Battle of Midway, the torpedoing of the USS Saratoga, the Battle of the Eastern Solomons, and the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, earning six Bronze Stars before he turned 20. After retiring as a chief petty officer at Naval Air Station Jacksonville in 1961, he joined the federal civil service for another 16 years. Patton turned 100 on March 23 and lives in Orangedale, Florida.
