New program offers buyouts for oceanfront homes in St. Johns County

Florida lawmakers have allocated $2.5 million to purchase around 20 homes in Summer Haven, St. John’s County, which were hit by hurricanes Ian and Nicole, causing major erosion. The Summer Haven Managed Retreat Program will buy out some of the beachfront homes at fair market value, with the program expected to last four to five years. Homeowners who wish to stay and take on the expenses themselves will be allowed to do so. Commissioner Henry Dean hopes the county and federal government will join lawmakers in funding the voluntary buyout of these homes.
