First Coast Opera Unveils Exciting New Season for October 2023-March 2024

Totally St. Augustine- First Coast Opera in St. Johns County, is set to charm and captivate audiences with its upcoming season. The renowned opera company has announced a thrilling lineup that includes Puccini’s “La Bohème” and Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Pirates of Penzance,” along with other surprises.

“Puccini’s La Bohème” promises to sweep audiences away with its emotional power. Set in 19th-century Paris, the beloved opera follows the passionate love story between poet Rodolfo and seamstress Mimi in the vibrant Latin Quarter. With its artistic expression, youthful fervor, and heartrending melodies, “La Bohème” is sure to be an unforgettable journey through passion, tragedy, and human connection.

In addition to “La Bohème,” First Coast Opera will also present Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Pirates of Penzance.” This uproarious comic operetta follows the charming pirate apprentice Frederic as he embarks on a swashbuckling adventure to escape the pirates, find love, and discover his true identity. Filled with witty dialogue, catchy tunes, and delightful characters, “The Pirates of Penzance” promises laughter and joy for all ages.

In addition to the main productions, First Coast Opera is hosting a season opener titled “Copland’s America” on October 27-28, 2023, at Celebration Hall. The event will feature excerpts from Aaron Copland’s opera “The Tender Land” and his “Old American Songs,” accompanied by a catered dinner by La Cocina International.

Other highlights of the season include the “Roaring 20s Gala” on February 14, 2023, at Cafe Alcazar in the Lightner Museum. Attendees are encouraged to dress in 1920s fashion for a night of sumptuous food, lively dancing, and exciting auctions.

Performances of “La Bohème” will take place on December 30-31, 2023, at Lewis Auditorium. This will be First Coast Opera’s first full staging of the iconic opera.

“The Pirates of Penzance” will be performed on March 15-17, 2024, also at Lewis Auditorium. Audiences can expect to be swept away by the beloved operetta’s unforgettable characters and catchy tunes.
