Friend of fallen St. Johns County deputy who died in the line of duty helps raise money for his family

A fundraiser took place on Saturday at the Elks Lodge in St. Augustine to support the family of Sgt. Michael Kunovich, a fallen deputy from the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office. The event was organized by Signal 34 Foundation, a community-supported organization that assists local law enforcement. The foundation aimed to ensure that Sgt. Kunovich’s family was cared for during this difficult time. The fundraiser featured a raffle and a silent auction to raise funds for the fallen deputy’s family. Sgt. Kunovich, who served the sheriff’s office for 25 years, passed away in May due to medical issues that arose during an altercation with Virjilio Aguilar-Mendez, who allegedly trespassed at a closed business. Aguilar-Mendez now faces a felony murder charge in connection with Sgt. Kunovich’s death. Kevin Munger, the co-founder of Signal 34 Foundation, expressed the importance of honoring Sgt. Kunovich’s memory and stated that regardless of the amount of money raised, gathering people together to remember his friend was significant. At the fundraiser, Kunovich’s children were presented with a gift in honor of their father.
